Why can’t blood relatives sign/witness your Living Will?
I’ve been working on my living will the past few hours. I’ve filled out a couple different templates of them, and they all say under the Witness section something to the extent of “I am not related to the patient by blood, marriage, or adoption.” Looked numerous places on online, haven’t been able to find a law that say a blood relative can’t be one of the witnesses. Only place blood relations come up are on the actual living will forms.
So I guess full question would be (A) can blood relatives sign your living will, (B) if no, why not?
I ask because I was hoping to get one or both of my parents or maybe one of my sisters to sign, at least then I know they’re people I can entirely trust to carry out my final wishes.
Does a Living Will “have” to be registered?
My dad-in-law is terminal and was given a Living Will form by the hospital to complete if he so wished. The documents state that you must complete and file with the US Living Will Registry in Westfield, NJ to be valid. I can’t believe that this absolutley must be filed in order to be valid. Can’t one just complete this form, or a generic of it, and keep on hand in known whereabouts if the issue ever comes up?
